Chapter thirty-five

Sinister Croaks in the Shadows

Stella instinctively clutched Theo's shirt, moving closer to him. Their eyes met, exchanging a silent conversation filled with concern.

Suddenly, pairs of glowing eyes pierced the darkness. First two, then four, six, and soon two dozen luminescent orbs stared back at them. A chilling growl broke the silence, and the moonlight revealed the grimace of twelve menacing creatures. Leaves rustled violently as cyan light enveloped the creatures, illuminating their form.

"They're notorious Tempest Toads," Joe warned. "Prepare for battle! Shield the non-combatants and brace for their attack!"

As his warning sounded, the group reacted quickly. Each member set down their heavy backpacks and other equipment onto the forest floor, unburdening themselves to move freely and prepare for the impending battle.

The researchers instinctively moved back, their eyes wide with terror as they looked toward the guards for protection. Three guards stepped forward, their left wrists glowing with the light of two brown rings each.

They thrust their hands forward, and earthen walls, two meters tall and wide, erupted from the forest floor, forming a protective barrier between them and the looming threat.

Other guards unsheathed their weapons, preparing to engage with their opponents. Captain Joe's right wrist ignited with three red rings, his sword ablaze with fierce flames as he readied himself to confront the threat head-on.

Unbeknownst to the others, Theo had perceived the approaching danger even before it fully revealed itself. Through his enhanced vision with [Leywin’s Gaze], he could clearly see the toads, each measuring one meter in size, possessing blue skin, cyan underbellies, and menacingly fixating their piercing yellow eyes on his group.

The sound of slicing air reverberated through the dark forest as beams of cyan light, sharp as blades, hurtled toward the group. The men, who had summoned earthen walls for protection, were caught off guard as the walls crumbled under the relentless assault. Shards of dirt and stone flew into the air, scattering across the forest floor.

Amidst the chaos, Captain Joe closed the distance with one of the Tempest Toads, his sword trailing flames. But as he struck from the side, other toads retaliated fiercely, launching a barrage of Aero blades at him.

Joe twisted and turned, trying to evade the incoming attacks, but three blades found their mark, slamming into his body with tremendous force. Surprisingly, his body radiated with an intense red glow, absorbing the impact as the blades dissolved into the fiery aura surrounding him.

However, the toads were relentless. They launched another volley of Aero blades, this time aiming directly at the main group. The earthen walls, already weakened, shattered upon impact, leaving the group exposed.

In a split second, Theo moved. With a quick push, he sent Donald tumbling out of harm's way, while his foot connected with James's stomach, causing him to stagger back. Simultaneously, he pulled Stella to the side, narrowly avoiding the blades that whizzed past where they had stood moments before.

The group's eyes widened in shock and awe at Theo's quick thinking and agility. His face remained composed, but his eyes, enhanced with [Leywin’s Gaze], were locked onto the enemies with unwavering focus.
